Coordination of Community Services

The Amigos Community Service Program connects people to the services they are seeking, maintains up-to-date information and helps with forms and translation. Amigos also meets with agencies to plan and explain ways to meet the Latino community's needs. The coordinator can arrange for interpretation if requested.

Amigos has sponsored many workshops on health, nutrition, immigration issues, legal information and child development. A Claim-aid Consultant is available at the Amigos office every other Wednesday, 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Literacy

    

Kindergarden Readiness-- "Amiguitos Listos"

Amigos has programs to encourage learning and thus promote the development of children from ages 0-5 years. We want to give these children a chance to succeed early in life, and make sure they are prepared to succeed in grade school.

    

     

Tutoring for K-12

Extra help wioth schoolwork for grade school children.  Tuesday nights from 5-7pm, Hispanic families can bring their kids in to get extra help from Earlham College volunteers to complete their homework, practice reading, use the internet or do more complex projects.

English as a Second Language Classes and Youth Activities at Townsend Center

On Monday and Wednesday evenings 6-8pm, Amigos coordinators and volunteers offer all levels of English instruction at Townsend    center. Dedicated office computers provide opportunities who work with Rosetta Stone. All classes are free and open to speakers of any language.

Fun and creative activities are provided for children while parents are in English class. It gets crazy sometimes!

  

Maestras comunitarias-- In-home ESL classes for mothers (and fathers)

In January 2011, we started an in-home ESL class program for mothers who need to be at home to take care of their children,

but want to learn English both for their benefit and their chidren's benefit.

  

Spanish Classes

On September 12, 2011, we are going to start Spanish classes to further develop the multilingual and multicultural understanding in the Richmond, IN community. Students can come up to 4 hours a weeks (Monday and Wednesdays from 6-8pm) and receive personalized classes designed to help them communicate with Spanish-speakers in their everyday lives.

                                                         

RITA: Richmond Interpreters and Translators Association

Run by Amigos volunteers, RITA provides on-site translation for health and social services appointments. Call (765) 277-2521.

Beginning August 1st, 2011, Amigos recommends $10 donations for translations and interpretations that don't take place in the office to support Amigos and RITA so that we may continue to offer this service. ¡Muchisimas gracias!

Corazón Latino

The Latino/a youth group, Corazón Latin@, was started in 2007 for middle and high school Latino/a students and their allies. It meets once a week to explore a number of issues including Latino identity, learning strategies, interests and applying to college. Discussions and activities are arranged with local community leaders and educators. Past field trips have included the HELP the Animals Shelter and the Women's Luna Film Festival at the Richmond Art museum.  In 2011, the group read House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.

Amigos in Richmond schools

Amigos assists in communication between local schools and Latino families. Through interpretations for Parent Teacher Conferences, translations of important documents, homework help, grade-level literature and much more, we enable schools and families to ensure opportunities for academic success for Latino students.
